Biography

Prof. Dr. Thomas M. Deserno (born as Lehmann) received the Diploma (Masters’ degree) in electrical engineering (School of Engineering), the PhD (summa cum laude) in computer science (School of Science), and the habilitation in medical informatics (School of Medicine) from the RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany, in 1992, 1998, and 2004, respectively. Between 2007 and 2017, he was full professor of medical informatics at Uniklinik RWTH Aachen. Since 2017, he is CEO of PLRI Campus Braunschweig. In 2022, Prof. Deserno was elected as the president of the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI).

Among more than 100 outstanding research papers, Dr. Deserno co-authored a textbook on image processing for the medical sciences (Springer, Berlin, 1997) and edited the Handbook of Medical Informatics (Hanser, Munich, 2005) as well as a book on Biomedical Image Processing within the series on Biological and Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering (Springer, Heidelberg, 2011).

His research interests include medical image processing applied to quantitative measurements for computer-assisted diagnoses, medical research in controlled clinical trials, as well as seamless workflow integration of image and signal analysis into the user’s workflow, in particular for applications in accident and emergency informatics.

Prof. Deserno received the DAGM-Preis '93. The award from the German Association for Pattern Recognition was given for his work on automatic strabometry using Hough transform and covariance filtering. In 1998, he received the Borcher's Medal from the RWTH Aachen for his work on medical image registration and interpolation. Dr. Deserno is senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Fellow of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentations Engineers (SPIE), where he is member of the Program Committee of the annually International Symposium of Medical Imaging (both, computer-aided diagnosis and imaging informatics tracks). He is a member of the International Association of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (IADMFR), and serves on the International Editorial Boards PLOS ONE, European Journal for Biomedical Informatics, Methods of Information in Medicine, Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, World Journal of Radiology, Acta Informatics Medica, and GMS Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (MIBE), and he is Co-editor Europe of the International Journal of Healthcare Information Systems and Informatics. In 2015, he became Associated Editor of SPIE Journal of Medical Imaging. Dr. Deserno is the Associate Editor of the journal "Biomedical Engineering / Biomedizinische Technik" for the topic "Information and Communication in Medicine" and "Telemedicine and eHealth“. In addition, he is the German representative in the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA).
