eLearning in Medicine and Dentistry

In 2005/2006, a reformed model for studying medicine was introduced at hte Hannover Medical School: HannibaL (Hannoveraner integrierter berufsorientierter adaptiver Lehrplan). The aim of this reform was is the realization of a practically oriented way of teaching, which better prepares students for the medical routine they will encounter as doctors. Theoretical and clinical subjects are taught in cross-disciplinary modules.

In order to optimally support the curriculum of HannibaL, a multi-level eLearning concept was developed. Among other things, this concept includes the digital supply of existing learning materials and integrates the use of modern communication methods, but also allows learners to develop their own content.

The multi-level concept allows for a varying complexity of the offered eLearning modules. The teachers can individually decide what level of eLearning offers they want to integrate into their courses. For each level, different solutions are available, depending on the requirements made by the lecturers.

The technical basis consists of the learning management System ILIAS and the content management system Schoolbook. ILIAS serves as a portal and offers a central point of entry to all eLearning offers. In Schoolbook, individual eLearning offers can be realized that take special requirements of all learning situations into account. All offers are continuously evaluated and the evaluation results are steadily refined and adapted to the requirements of the curriculum.

Starting in 2006, all students of the MHH receive an individual login to ILIAS. From ILIAS, links to the contents of the Schoolbook system are provided.

The development of the various eLearning offers was carried out in the context of various projects financed by the State of Lower Saxony as well as the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research).
